Plastering ceilings is a great way to add beauty and value to a home. There is nothing more appealing then a beautifully textured ceiling to bring about the wonderful feelings that one finds with a job well done. There is nothing that should stop a person from plastering their ceilings. While it may seem like a tremendously daunting task, it is really no more difficult then plastering a wall or the like. The only difference is the person doing the plastering is having to operate upside down rather then standing straight up like they would with walls and such. Depending on the height of the ceilings and so on there is no reason why this type of project cannot be finished in a reasonable amount of time, very close to similar projects that involve plaster. The key is in the preparation and planning of such a project to make sure it is a smooth procedure.
First and foremost one should plan out the way in which they will reach the ceiling. Many homes are equipped with standard eight foot ceilings which are easy to reach. For this type of ceiling all you really need is a ladder of standard height to make sure that you can reach the desired areas.
If you are a person that is not too tall make sure that you can reach the ceiling without standing on the top rung of the ladder. Standing on the top rung of the ladder is highly dangerous and can cause the ladder to tip over. While a fall from a height of eight feet may not sound like much, it will be more painful then you could ever imagine and broken bones can occur from such a distance.
For those that have the higher ceilings then either a taller ladder or maybe a bit of scaffolding should be used. Scaffolding is the best choice because it will allow you more freedom when moving around and you will not have to spend so much time moving the ladder. Scaffolding is available for rent through many home improvement stores and will make the job a whole lot easier then you could ever imagine. Secure placement of the scaffolding is key. Make sure that you follow the instructions for its placement and securing to the letter before making any attempts to stand on it.
When you are plastering a ceiling make sure that you have proper eye protection. Wear a pair of safety goggles to prevent the plaster from getting into your eyes. Remember that the plaster will not set right away and small drops can loosen and fall. When you are plastering the ceiling you will be spending the majority of the time looking up and right into the line of fire. A drop of plaster in the eyes can require emergency medical treatment so protect yourself at all costs. Also ensure that you are doing the project with someone else in the area. That way if there is any kind of accident you have someone available to call for help.
