Throughout history we have seen the style and design of homes and buildings change in big ways. The old ways of building are sometimes forgotten and then they reappear sometime later when the style is once again appealing to the masses. We have seen that some of the oldest buildings and homes in the world are now being used as models for the newer homes. Updates are made but the look is appealing and that means a revisiting of the entire process. There are companies that now specialize in creating homes and buildings in the older style of design and this has been quite popular over the years. Thanks to this there is now a need and demand for many of the old time styles and fixtures and people are struggling to keep up with the demand. You will have a grand time learning about the differences and the overall appeal of these buildings if you take the time to remodel an older home. This all comes into play when you have purchased a home that is part of a historical society. They have a certain set of rules that must be followed and they wish to have all the homes remain in their original glory rather then have them changed to the newer and more modern looks.

Cornices are one of the many additions to homes and buildings that is making a big time come back. This addition was popular in the early days of the United States and parts of Europe but was canned after the war in an effort to make things more appealing. A cornice is nothing more then a over hanging section of the roof or a wall when you are speaking of the interior. The over hang on the roof had some function in the early years as it was used to hold the gutters and down spouts but that was the extent of their use. If you travel to places like California you will see that most of the older homes have an outdoor cornice. Most of them are highly decorative and make for the most impressive looking part of the top of the house. Many of the people who own these houses have sought to restore the cornices and make them once again a proud part of the homes.

Interior cornices have never served any kind of purpose other then to add a bit of decoration to the home. Inside the home you will sometimes find a cornice that resides along the top of the wall. In the United States this is now more commonly referred to as crown moulding rather then a cornice but they are essentially the same thing.

Most of the interior cornices that you see these days are created using a form of plaster and several other parts that are easy to come by. These is in response to the ready made cornices that at one time were popular but fell out of favor with the masses when they were discovered to be very cheap in their construction.
